A wireless communication and web service device designed to service an independent publications in webzine format when a smartphone attempts to log in to a hotspot.

Let's create a device together that uses a portable, ultra-compact Wi-Fi server to deliver your personal message and story via a pop-up webpage to anyone connecting to your Wi-Fi signal. You could call it the Wi-Fi version of making a zine, also known as a small independent publication. The Wi-Fi signal name becomes the book cover, and the content viewed upon connection becomes the book's content!

WiFi-Zine can only be accessed and read within the physical range of the router's signal, so it's like speaking in a secretive manner to a specific place where the signal is present, and to the few people encountered there. It's quite different from the webzine on the internet, which connects everywhere, all the time, for everyone, isn't it?

Various Wi-Fi networks can be viewed on a smartphone.
When you connect to Wi-Fi, the content appears in a pop-up webpage

Fake free Wi-Fi

The story of animals dying with their skulls open in the cognitive science laboratory

Zine asking to show his late grandparents around Seoul, Zine talking about the Pyeongchang Olympics

The Truth About What We Really Need to Know About Chickens

Devices connected to the Wi-Fi network synchronise, outputting the same image or sound.

Workshop Process:
- A discussion about Wi-Fi Zine, where participants share stories they'd like to throw into the air
- Learning how to add text or images to the pop-up window that appears on the Wi-Fi server module, along with the name of your Wi-Fi Zine and Wi-Fi title
- Planning and writing your Wi-Fi Zine by structuring your story
- Connecting rechargeable batteries to the Wi-Fi server module to make it mobile, placing it in a container, and planning and producing the Wi-Fi Zine object
- Seeking out and experimenting with locations, forms, or attitudes for the performance of your own Wi-Fi Zine

Wifi-Zine Walking Signal
2019. May 4

Interdisciplinary artist duo Dianaband (Wonjung Shin 신원정 and Dooho Yi 이두호) from Seoul guided this workshop to utilize mobile battery-powered ESP32 WiFi modules for publishing zine content. We built small web publications on top of Hotspot login screens. If you get a WiFi signal, you get a pop-up page which not associated with the WWW. On top of this you can build a small web page. Content can be audio, text or image files with a limit of around 2MB, and participants attached sensors to the module or to plan an inter-connected activity between the viewers. We explored the possibilities of hotspot publishing conceptually as well as technically.
